Electrical panel upgrade Thunder Bay ON

Picture
You’ve heard the expression “he’s blown a fuse!”  That was more relevant back in the day when fuses were commonly used.  These days, you’ll find circuit breakers in more modern homes. An electrical panel houses these circuit breakers, whose main function is to provide an important safety mechanism in the event of a fault, thereby preventing an electrical overload from creating a fire hazard.

Here are the top two questions we’ve been commonly asked regarding electrical panels:

  1. Should I upgrade my electrical panel?

This depends on a few factors, but here are some possible reasons why a service panel upgrade would be a good idea:

  • If you live in an older home, you may still have a 60-amp or similar amperage panel.  With larger and higher power-consuming appliances requiring a 240V circuit (think air conditioner, heater, washer, dryer, refrigerator, hot tub), you’d be wise if you upgrade electrical panel to 200 amps.

  • If your home still has a fuse box, and you want to know if you should change a fuse box to a breaker box, in the name of safety and efficiency, the answer is “yes”.  Fuse boxes don’t have the protective mechanisms offered by a breaker box and aren’t the best choice in a modern home with modern devices.

  • If you upgrade electrical panel to 200 amps, from an efficiency and safety standpoint, you should expect to: prevent fire risks, enjoy a steady flow of electricity (reducing faulty or malfunctioning appliances or lights), and enjoy fewer power surges.

  • Save money: since appliances will run more efficiently, you may see a reduced electric bill.  Plus, your home insurance cost will likely be lower. Bonus: your home value will be higher than if the electrical panel wasn’t upgraded.

  • Large home remodel or suite addition: a larger square footage of space using power will require an electrical upgrade.

  • Overuse of extension cords and power bars can indicate that you risk overloading these tools.  For upgrading considerations, you can let each circuit run directly from the panel or install a new outlet and circuit.
     2.  How much does it cost to upgrade electrical panel?

In Ontario, you’re looking at a cost of about $3,000, give or take $1,000.  This of course is dependent on your dwelling’s amperage requirements, number of circuits needed, and complexity of the job.  Consult our Thunder Bay electricians to assess your home and business needs and we will give you an estimate based on your situation.

No matter what your situation is, you want to look for a licensed electrician who is skilled and experienced at assessing your home or business’s electrical needs, and advise accordingly.  The last thing you need is for a mismanaged project, or someone who advises an upgrade to 400 amps in a standard 2,000 square foot home with the usual appliances when 200 amps would do the trick.  We are master electricians who excel at their job and do it with integrity. Call our Thunder Bay electricians today for your electrical panel upgrade needs and expect nothing less than high quality, affordable and timely service.
