Electrical repairs Thunder Bay ON

Electrical issues are something most residents and business owners will likely encounter at some point.  There are so many wiring networks and systems that there’s a chance something can go wrong. Here are some common electrical issues you might come across:

Circuit breaker keeps tripping

What does it mean when a circuit breaker keeps tripping?  If you’re using a device and there’s a surge of electricity that can’t be handled by the circuit breaker, the breaker trips as a safety mechanism to prevent overheating.  The most common cause of this is an overloaded circuit where multiple appliances on the same circuit are used at the same time. For immediate troubleshooting, take a look at the devices used on that circuit and consider using lower powered settings if it’s an option (a hairdryer, for example).

Other things to look out for are appliances that sputter, emit a smell or show any other signs of malfunction. The reduced efficiency can mean more power is utilized to keep it working. So this may mean replacing that appliance altogether. You can also consider moving one or more of the appliances to a different circuit to offload some of the burden.  Other possible but less common causes of tripped circuit breaker can include a short circuit, or ground fault caused by damaged insulation on wires and cables.

Lights keep flickering

If your lights flicker during inclement weather such as high winds or a big storm, it could be due to a minor power outage or electrical system short.  Electrical grid issues can cause this as well. However, if flickering lights are a recurrent issue, a malfunctioning light fixture or poor wiring connection could be the cause.  If in doubt, call your trusted Thunder Bay electrician to assess and rectify the situation.

Lights too dim or too bright

One simple cause of this is that the bulbs of a light fixture don’t have the same wattage or lumens, so make sure they match.  The second possible cause is a faulty main neutral connection, in which case you need to consult a professional.

Warm outlet

If a receptacle is warm to the touch, here are some possible causes that need attention:

  • Too many devices plugged into an outlet via power bar
  • Damaged switch or plug
  • Damaged wiring inside the plug or loose terminals
  • Wrong fuse or breaker size
  • Too many devices on the same circuit

Some of these may be rectified by the homeowner or business owner, but the ones that involve damaged parts warrant attention from a qualified licensed electrician.

Electric bill is rising

If you find your hydro bill inexplicably and steadily rising, your home may have issues with power inefficiencies.  This can be due to poor insulation or an old furnace, to name a few. Your local Thunder Bay electrician can help you diagnose the problem if it’s an electrical concern.

There are a variety of possible electrical problems that can creep up involving your home or business’s lighting system, electrical panel, wiring or appliances.  A select few can be easily remedied by the owner, but there are quite a few that should not be attempted as they are risky and require an expert electrician to fix it.  We are confident our Thunder Bay electricians can handle all your electrical repair needs.
